From June 2 to 4, 2023, Shishido and I conducted an experiment.
We simply wanted to know:
If we held an unannounced calligraphy workshop in Asakusa, how many travelers would join?
The result exceeded anything we imagined.
It wasn’t just the number of participants—
it was the brilliance in their expressions.
Especially those who tried the large brush for the first time. Their reactions were unforgettable.

After earnest basic practice, they changed into calligraphy attire, removed their socks, and bowed deeply.
Then came their first attempt—awkward at first, yet each stroke overflowed with individuality and energy.
Their focused gaze, and the refreshing, almost purified smile they showed after finishing…
I still can’t forget it.
What a beautiful expression.
A fleeting moment of Zen.
On the way home on the final day, we made a quiet vow to ourselves:
We want to continue living in a way that allows us to create moments like this.
And along the way, we also met precious companions—people who share the same wish to experience and share the wonder of these once-in-a-lifetime encounters.
We want to study calligraphy—no, Japanese culture itself—even more deeply, so we can convey its beauty to as many people as possible.
